Solar System Sizing Calculator

Estimate the ideal solar panel system size for your home or business based on your electricity consumption (TNB bill). Get instant insights into system requirements, roof space needs, and feasibility.

Solar System Calculator

Enter your details below to calculate your solar system requirements

Calculate Your Solar Needs

kWh
500 kWh
hours
4 hours
For Malaysia: typically 3.5 to 4 hours daily
40 m²
Each 1 kWp requires approximately 7-10 m² of roof space

Calculation Results

Daily Electricity Consumption:
16.67 kWh/day
Required Solar System Size:
4.17 kWp
Roof Space Required:
41.7 m²
Roof Space Available:
40 m²
System Feasibility:
Marginally Feasible Medium
Based on your available roof space, the recommended system size may need adjustment. Consider higher efficiency panels or a slightly smaller system.

How It Works

1 Analyze Electricity Usage
Check your average monthly electricity consumption in kilowatt-hours (kWh) from your TNB bill.
Example: Average TNB bill = 500 kWh/month
2 Calculate Daily Average
Divide monthly kWh by 30 days to get daily average consumption.
Daily Average = Monthly kWh ÷ 30 days
Example: 500 kWh ÷ 30 days = 16.67 kWh/day
3 Estimate Solar System Capacity
In Malaysia, average peak sun hours is around 3.5 to 4 hours daily.
Solar Capacity (kWp) = Daily Consumption ÷ Peak Sun Hours
Example: 16.67 kWh/day ÷ 4 hours ≈ 4.17 kWp
This means a solar system of about 4-5 kWp is suitable for this consumption.
4 Check Roof Space
As a general rule, 1 kWp requires about 7-10 m² of roof space (depending on panel efficiency).
Roof Space Required = System Size (kWp) × 10 m²
Example: 4 kWp × 10 m² = 40 m² of roof space needed

Important Notes

  • These calculations provide estimates only
  • Actual system size may vary based on panel efficiency, orientation, and shading
  • Consult with a professional solar installer for accurate assessment
  • Consider future electricity needs when sizing your system
  • All calculations are based on Malaysian climate conditions

Solar ATAP Guide for Malaysia

Solar ATAP (Solar Accelerated Transition Action Programme) is Malaysia's new consumer rooftop solar programme effective 1 January 2026. Here's what you need to know at a glance:

Aspect Key Information for Consumers
Effective Date 1 January 2026
Programme Period Up to 10 years from system commencement
Eligibility TNB consumers in Peninsular Malaysia (not under multi-tenant arrangements)
Export Credits Homes: Based on TNB bill energy charge.
Businesses: Based on variable Average System Marginal Price (SMP).
Credit Settlement Monthly bill offset. Unused credits are forfeited each month; no cash payout.
System Size Limit Homes: Up to 5kW (single-phase) or 15kW (three-phase).
Businesses: Up to 100% of Maximum Demand, capped at 1MW.
Application Portal eATAP system managed by SEDA Malaysia
Key Action System must be sized correctly for self-consumption to maximise savings.

Important Note

Solar ATAP credits do not carry forward to the next month. Any unused credits are forfeited. This makes proper system sizing critical to maximize your return on investment. Our experts at Terra Force can help design a system optimized for your specific consumption patterns.

Solar ATAP: Frequently Asked Questions

Get quick answers to common questions about Malaysia's new Solar ATAP programme.

1 What is Solar ATAP?

Solar ATAP is a solar rooftop programme introduced by Suruhanjaya Tenaga (Energy Commission) that allows electricity consumers in Peninsular Malaysia to install solar PV systems, use solar energy for self-consumption, export excess energy to the TNB grid, and receive bill credits for exported energy.

2 How are export credits valued?

For Domestic (Home) users: Based on the Energy Charge in your TNB bill. For Non-Domestic (Business) users: Based on Average System Marginal Price (Average SMP), a wholesale electricity price that varies monthly.

3 How do export credits apply to bills?

Export credits are calculated monthly and offset your next bill. Unused credits do not carry forward and are forfeited. Credits cannot offset non-energy charges like Automatic Fuel Adjustment (AFA).

4 What are the system size limits?

Domestic: Up to 5kW (single-phase) or 15kW (three-phase). Non-Domestic: Up to 100% of Maximum Demand, capped at 1MW.

5 Can I switch from NEM to ATAP?

Yes, but you must terminate your existing NEM or SELCO contract first. The remaining contract duration counts toward your new 10-year ATAP period.

Terra Force Handles the ATAP Process

When you work with Terra Force, we manage the entire Solar ATAP application process including technical documentation, eATAP submission, and TNB coordination. As your CIDB-registered and EC-licensed contractor, we ensure full compliance with all regulatory requirements.
